Iodine deficiency can often be recognised by growths or tumour-like bulges on the fish. Most of these are in the region of the gills.
This deficiency condition can be combated long-term by adding iodine and by balanced nutrition. Only when keeping fish from alkaline waters like e.g. Lake Malawi or Lake Tanganyika is it not advisable to add iodine in the water. In this case, one must resort to food containing iodine.
